Line is a fundamental of drawing, and a drawn line the simplest demonstration of the relationship between figure and ground. A line drawn on a sheet of paper represents a minimal world where the paper becomes a field, the ground, and the line itself a figure. An essential, indelible dialectic is set up between them, serving as an image of our relationship to a world we daily negotiate in the same fundamental, if mostly unconscious way, constantly discriminating between the one and the other.
Of all lines, of all drawn elements, the straight line is the most tenuous . . .

Die Linie ist eine Grundvoraussetzung des Zeichnens. Eine gezeichnete Linie demonstriert am einfachsten die Beziehung zwischen Gestalt und Grund. Eine auf einem Blatt Papier gezeichnete Linie repräsentiert eine Welt im Kleinen, in der das Papier ein Feld wird, der Grund, und die Linie ein Gestalt. Zwischen ihnen bildet sich eine essentielle, unauslöschliche Dialektik, die unsere Beziehung zu einer Welt widerspiegelt, in der wir uns jeden Tag im Grunde auf die gleiche Art bewegen, wenn auch meist unbewusst. Dabei wählen wir ständig zwischen mehreren Möglichkeiten.
Von allen Linien, allen gezeichneten Elementen, ist die gerade Linie die fragilste . . .
